Bali Airport Arrival Tips — A First-Timer’s Complete Guide

Landing in Bali for the first time can feel chaotic. The humidity hits you the moment the door opens, the airport hall is loud, and you have probably just stepped off a flight from Australia, Asia, the Middle East, or Europe with a body that thinks it is the wrong time of day. The Airport Itself: What DPS Looks Like

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (IATA: DPS, ICAO: WADD) sits 13 km south of Denpasar, on the narrow neck of land between Kuta and Jimbaran. There is one international terminal and one domestic terminal, side by side. The international terminal is single-level for arrivals and two-level for departures. The walk from gate to immigration is short (5 to 10 minutes for most gates).

Step 1: Disembarkation and Walk to Immigration

You will exit the aircraft via jet bridge at most gates. Some remote stands require a bus to the terminal. Either way, follow the “Arrival” signs. The walk is well marked and you will pass duty-free shops on the way to immigration.

If you booked meet and greet or fast track, your concierge meets you at the jet bridge or at a designated point near the gate. They will be in uniform and holding a sign with your name.

Step 2: Visa Counter (If Needed)

Step 3: Immigration

At the counter, present:

• Passport (must have 6+ months validity)
• eVOA QR code (if pre-registered) or visa sticker
• Tourism Levy QR code (Love Bali)
• Return or onward ticket (rarely checked but required)

Step 4: Baggage Claim

After immigration, you enter baggage claim. There are 8 carousels. Your flight’s carousel will be displayed on screens above each one. Trolleys are free of charge. Porter assistance is available for tips (~IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per bag).

Step 5: Customs

You must complete the electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) at ecd.beacukai.go.id within 3 days of arrival. You will receive a QR code by email. At customs, scan the QR at the kiosk or show it to the officer. Goods to declare: cash exceeding IDR 100 million (~$6,500), goods exceeding $500 personal allowance, controlled items.

Step 6: Exit to Arrival Hall

The arrival hall is busy. You will see drivers holding signs, families waiting, and (unfortunately) a parade of taxi tout vendors. Stay focused on finding your prearranged driver name. If you booked through a reputable service, your driver will be waiting just past the customs exit.

What Not to Do at Arrivals

• Do not accept rides from non-uniformed solicitors. Pre-book your transfer.
• Do not change all your money at the airport. Rates are 5 to 15 percent worse than in town. Change just enough to get through day one.
• Do not buy SIM cards from unknown vendors at the kiosk row. Use a reputable provider or a pre-arranged eSIM.
• Do not connect to free wifi to check sensitive accounts. Public airport wifi is rarely secure.
• Do not stop in the middle of the arrival hall to consult your phone. Move to the side; the place gets congested fast.
