What is Bali Airport called, and why "DPS"?

Bali's airport is officially named I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, after a Balinese national hero. You will also see it written simply as Ngurah Rai Airport or Denpasar Airport. Its three-letter IATA code — the one printed on your boarding pass and used by every booking site — is DPS, short for Denpasar, the provincial capital just north of the airport. Its four-letter ICAO code is WADD. So "bali airport", "DPS airport", "Ngurah Rai airport" and "Denpasar airport" all refer to the same place. When you book a flight, look for DPS.

Despite the "Denpasar" label, the airport does not sit in Denpasar city itself — it is in Tuban, on the narrow neck of land between Kuta and Jimbaran, right on the coast. That southern location is why the nearest beach resorts (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua) are only 10–20 minutes away in light traffic, while Ubud and the north take considerably longer.

Terminals: international vs domestic

DPS has two terminals sitting next to each other on the same airfield, linked by a walkway and sharing the same landside roads and car parks. This compact footprint is genuinely good news on arrival: taxis, ride-hail and pre-booked transfers all work from the same small area, and nothing is more than a few minutes' walk once you are oriented.

International terminal — the larger, newer building, where almost all overseas visitors land. Arrivals are on the ground floor; departures are upstairs. The arrival flow is: aircraft → immigration (with e-Gates for eligible passports) → baggage claim → customs → the public arrival hall.

Domestic terminal — a short walk away, handling flights to and from Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok, Labuan Bajo and other Indonesian cities. If you are connecting from an international arrival to a domestic flight (or vice versa), allow buffer time to collect bags, exit, and walk between terminals. Where the airport is, and finding your ride

The single landside road loops past both terminals, so orientation is simple. On the map of your arrival, the meeting point is straightforward: exit customs into the international arrival hall and look for the railing directly ahead where drivers stand with name signs. Smart tips for a smooth arrival

A few habits make the difference between a frazzled first hour and an easy one:

• Pre-book your ride. Landing tired into an unfamiliar terminal is the worst moment to negotiate a fare. A driver already holding your name removes the single biggest arrival friction — and locks the price before you fly.
• Carry some rupiah. Draw cash from an arrival-hall ATM for small tips, snacks or a SIM top-up. Cards work widely, but a little cash smooths the first day.
• Have your documents ready. Visa on arrival (or e-VOA), electronic customs declaration QR, and a hotel address speed you through immigration and customs.
• Budget for the evening rush. If you land in the 17:00–23:00 peak, immigration and the road north can both be slow — build in buffer, or add a fast-track escort to skip the queue.
