You state your hotel, pay the desk, take a slip, and walk to the rank. It is legitimate, it is always open when flights are landing, and it requires zero planning — which is exactly its value. The trade-offs are practical: after a red-eye you queue twice (desk, then rank), the rate is whatever the poster says that season, and the driver you get is whoever is next in line. If you land with no booking and no data connection, this is your best fallback.
Both Indonesian ride-hailing apps work at Bali airport, with pickups from designated zones rather than the arrivals curb. For a solo traveller with cabin luggage and an Indonesian SIM already working, this is often the cheapest door — the app shows the fare before you order, and the walk to the pickup point is manageable. It gets less attractive at midnight with two trolleys and jet-lagged children: fares climb when demand spikes around late-arrival banks, drivers cannot wait long at the zone, and coordinating “which pillar are you at” over a hotel Wi-Fi eSIM is nobody’s favourite start to a holiday.

An honest decision guide: travelling solo with a backpack and a working local SIM — use the apps, and keep the counter as backup. Landed with no plan at all — walk to the taxi desk and be done with it. Arriving as a family, landing after 22:00, heading to a villa whose address is a Google Maps pin down a lane, or connecting to a boat with a deadline — pre-book a private car, because the nameboard, the flight tracking and the agreed price remove every failure point that matters at that moment. Staying at a resort whose shuttle price you are happy with — take the shuttle.
Whoever you book with, a quoted “all-in” transfer price should cover tolls, parking, an air-conditioned vehicle, and a named meeting point — and any surcharges should be stated before you commit.
