Padangbai is Bali’s main gateway to the Gili Islands and Lombok, and two very different services leave from the same small harbour. Fast boats — Eka Jaya, Wahana, and a dozen other operators — cross to Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Bangsal in roughly 90 minutes to 2 hours, with departures concentrated in a morning-to-early-afternoon window, typically between about 09:00 and 13:30. The public car ferry to Lembar (Lombok) is the slow workhorse: it runs day and night, generally departing every 60 to 90 minutes, and takes 4 to 5 hours to cross.

Schedules genuinely move with the season, swell, and harbour authority decisions, so treat any timetable — including this one — as a planning guide and reconfirm your exact departure with the boat operator the day before. What doesn’t change: fast-boat check-in desks want you there early, and the harbour car park is chaos at peak departure times. We recommend arriving 60 minutes before a fast boat and 30 to 45 minutes before the public ferry.

Can You Land at DPS and Catch a Gili Boat the Same Day?

Sometimes — and the arithmetic decides it, not optimism. From wheels-down at DPS, allow 45 to 75 minutes for immigration and bags on an international arrival (less for domestic), 75 to 115 minutes of driving, and the 60-minute fast-boat check-in buffer. That totals three to four hours between landing and the boat leaving the dock.

In practice: a flight landing by 08:30 comfortably makes a midday fast boat. Landing after about 10:00 puts the last afternoon departures at risk, and a delay would leave you watching the boat from the toll road. What Happens When You Arrive at Padangbai

Your driver drops you as close to the fast-boat check-in desks as the harbour police allow that day — the drop zone shifts during busy periods. From there it is a short walk to your operator’s counter to exchange your voucher for boarding stickers. Porters will offer to wheel your bags to the jetty; the service is genuinely useful with dive bags or more than two cases, but agree the price per bag before handing anything over, as there is no fixed porter tariff.

Keep your passport handy even for the Gilis — operators check names against the manifest — and keep valuables in your daypack rather than checked luggage, which travels on the boat roof or open stern under a tarp.
