Pemuteran sits about as far from the airport as you can stay on Bali, tucked between the hills and the sea just east of West Bali National Park. Most drivers take the west-coast road: out through Tabanan’s rice country, then the long, hypnotic run down the Jembrana coastline where the road hugs black-sand beaches and fishing villages for the better part of an hour. Past Negara, the route reaches the Cekik junction near Gilimanuk — where the Java ferries dock — and turns east along the north coast for the final stretch into Pemuteran’s bay.
There’s also an inland route over the hills, prettier in places but bendier; your chauffeur chooses based on traffic and the time of day.
