You walk in from the pebble shore — no boat required. That single fact drives everything about this route, including when you should book your transfer.

Day-trip groups from south Bali start splashing around 10:30. Guests who sleep in Tulamben get the wreck almost to themselves at 07:00, which is why most divers ride up the afternoon before, drop bags at a resort along the main road, and dive at first light. 102 km: Coast Road, Then Lava Country

Count on 2 hours 35 minutes to about 3.5 hours. The route runs east along the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass past Klungkung and Goa Lawah, through Candidasa, inland via Amlapura, then over the Culik junction where the Amed traffic peels off. The last stretch to Tulamben crosses old lava flows from Mount Agung’s 1963 eruption — the same eruption that pushed the Liberty off the beach and onto the sand slope where divers find her today. It is a genuinely scenic final half hour, with the mountain filling the windscreen on clear afternoons.

Traffic risk is front-loaded: the airport-to-Sanur segment between 16:00 and 19:00 is the only part that regularly crawls. Morning and evening departures usually land near the bottom of the time range. There are no toll booths after the airport area and no fuel or timing surprises — your driver does this run with dive bags in the boot most weeks of the year.

The No-Fly Window, Done Properly

The return transfer is where Tulamben trips go wrong, so we plan it with you. Standard dive guidance calls for at least 18 hours between your last single dive and flying, and 24 hours after repetitive dives — which describes almost everyone who comes for the Liberty. Work backwards from your departure: an 11:00 international flight means airport check-in by 08:00, leaving Tulamben by about 05:00, which in turn means your last dive should finish by early morning the day before.

The cleaner pattern our regulars use: final dives in the morning, a slow afternoon, then either an overnight in Sanur on the way back or a direct early transfer on departure day.
