The Route: What You’ll See Between DPS and Uluwatu
Leaving the terminal, your driver joins Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai heading south past Kedonganan, where the fish market and beachfront seafood grills mark the start of Jimbaran Bay. The road then climbs the Bukit Peninsula on Jl. Uluwatu, passing Udayana University before the entrance to GWK Cultural Park — look left as the car gains height and you’ll catch the giant Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue above the treeline.
From the GWK junction the route runs through Ungasan and into Pecatu, where surf shops and warungs gradually replace offices and showrooms. The last stretch crosses the Padang Padang bridge onto Jl. Labuansait — the strip that leads to Uluwatu Temple, Suluban Beach and most of the clifftop villas people mean when they say “staying in Uluwatu”.
Traffic to Uluwatu, Hour by Hour
- 05:00–09:00 — the quietest window. Most of the traffic flows the other way, into Denpasar, and the drive sits near the 45-minute mark.
- 09:00–15:00 — steady but moving. On good swell days the parking areas at Padang Padang fill up and the last kilometres slow slightly.
- 16:00–19:00 — the slow window. Sunset traffic converges on Uluwatu Temple (the Kecak fire dance draws crowds from around 18:00) and the GWK junction backs up. Plan on the full 75 minutes.
- 19:00–22:00 — easing as temple traffic disperses; beach club departures keep Jl. Labuansait busy on weekends.
- 22:00–05:00 — the fastest run of the day, usually close to 45 minutes. The $5 night surcharge applies in this window.
