First, a private car from DPS to a departure port on Bali’s east or south-east coast. Second, a fast-boat crossing of the Lombok Strait. Third, a short walk, cidomo (pony cart), or dinghy to your accommodation, because the Gilis have no motorised vehicles at all.

Boats leave on their own schedule and won’t wait; a driver who tracks your flight, knows the right harbour, and times the pickup to your departure is the difference between a relaxed crossing and watching your boat pull away. For most travellers landing at DPS, Padangbai is the practical choice: the crossing is short, and a dozen operators run a dense morning-to-early-afternoon grid, so there’s more room to recover from a delay. Serangan trades a longer sea leg for a much shorter drive and is worth it if your operator sails from there. Amed only makes sense if you’re already exploring north-east Bali — the two-lane coast road is slow, but the crossing is the shortest of the three.

Can You Land at DPS and Reach the Gilis the Same Day?

Sometimes — and the arithmetic decides it, not optimism. Take the Padangbai route: from wheels-down at DPS, allow 45 to 75 minutes for immigration and bags on an international arrival, 75 to 115 minutes of driving, and a 60-minute fast-boat check-in buffer. That totals three to four hours between landing and the boat leaving the dock, and the last Gili fast boats generally go in the early afternoon.

In practice, a flight landing by about 08:30 comfortably makes a midday boat. Land after roughly 10:00 and the last departures are at risk — a delay would leave you stranded on the wrong side of the strait for the night. When timing is tight, the calmer play is an overnight near the port: Candidasa is 20 minutes past Padangbai with hotels on the water via our East Bali routes, and you catch the first, calmest boat the next morning rested. Serangan’s much shorter drive stretches your same-day window later into the afternoon if your operator sails from there.

Trawangan, Air, or Meno — and Getting to Your Room

Most fast boats call at Gili Trawangan first, then Gili Air; Gili Meno, the quiet middle island, is served by fewer direct boats and sometimes reached by a short island-hop. Trawangan is the liveliest, with the widest choice of bars, dive shops, and beach clubs. Gili Air balances a relaxed pace with enough cafes and dive centres to stay busy. Gili Meno is the honeymoon-quiet one — bring what you need, as services are limited.

Remember there are no cars or scooters on any of the three islands. From the boat landing you’ll walk, hire a cidomo pony cart, or take a short dinghy if your hotel is on the far side. Pack a small daypack with essentials for the crossing and keep valuables out of checked bags, which travel on the open stern under a tarp.
