The drive
What You’ll See Between the Airport and Sanur
Sanur is one of the easier arrivals in south Bali because the route barely touches the island’s worst traffic. From the terminal, your driver joins the Ngurah Rai Bypass heading east, skirting the edge of Kuta rather than going through it. You’ll pass the Pesanggaran industrial strip and the turn-off to Benoa Harbour, where cruise ships and fuel tankers sit off to your right.
The prettiest stretch comes next: the protected mangrove forest around Suwung, where the bypass runs between walls of green for a couple of kilometres. Keep an eye out for the bridge turn-off to Serangan — locals still call it Turtle Island. When the bypass jams here, your chauffeur can swing onto the Bali Mandara toll road at Benoa instead; the toll is already inside your fare, so there is nothing extra to pay.
You’ll know Sanur has started when the ICON Bali mall appears on the bypass. From there it is a few minutes into the beach village itself — down Jl. Hang Tuah for the north end, or into the Jl. Danau Poso and Jl. Danau Tamblingan strip for the centre and south. Sanur’s beach strip runs on a partial one-way system, so your driver may loop in from what feels like the long way around. That’s normal, not a detour.
