Two Legs, One Plan: Car to the Harbour, Boat to the Island

Nusa Penida sits about 20 km off Bali’s southeast coast, across the Badung Strait. Because it is a separate island, “Bali airport to Nusa Penida” is never a single ride — it is a car leg to a mainland harbour and a fast-boat crossing, stitched together with the right timing. Get the timing wrong and you watch the last boat pull away with your day trip on it; get it right and you are on a Kelingking-bound speedboat within a couple of hours of clearing immigration.

Almost every Penida-bound traveller departs from Sanur Harbour, the organised terminal that replaced the old beach-launch at Matahari Terbit. It has the densest boat grid, the most operators, and a proper jetty. A handful of boats also run from Serangan, closer to the airport, which some operators prefer in rough southerly swell — if your boat company put you on a Serangan departure, tell us and we adjust the pickup and route; the harbour-transfer fare is quoted the same way. For the great majority, the plan below uses Sanur.

What the Car Really Costs — and What the Boat Costs

The car and the boat are two separate purchases, and it helps to see them clearly. A street taxi or Grab from the airport to Sanur runs a rough market range of Rp 250,000–400,000, cheaper on paper but metered to traffic, without meet-and-greet, and not timed to your boat. Our airport-to-harbour car is a fixed Rp 1,875,000 (~$115) that includes a nameboard meet-and-greet, flight tracking, tolls and parking, and a pickup worked backwards from your departure so a delayed landing does not cost you the crossing.

The fast boat is a third-party ticket we do not sell — buy it directly from an operator such as those at the terminal. Expect roughly Rp 150,000–350,000 per person one way depending on whether you take a shared public boat or a premium service, more for a return. Booking the boat yourself keeps you in control of the schedule; our job is to have you at the counter with time to spare.

Airport to Sanur Harbour: Fixed Car Prices

Per vehicle, one way, over 18 km — the boat is a separate ticket you buy at the terminal.

The fare covers nameboard meet & greet, flight tracking, tolls and parking, air-conditioning and bottled water. Add the return leg for 5% off the combined price — handy for island stays that end with a flight home. Night pickups (22:00–05:00) carry a $5 surcharge, card payments add 3%, and each extra stop is $10. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours ahead. The Full Route, in Order

1. Land at DPS and clear immigration. Allow 45–75 minutes from wheels-down to the arrivals curb for passport control and bags — longer on peak evenings. Your driver is already tracking the flight.
2. Meet your driver at arrivals. Look for your name on the board just past customs; the car is a short walk away in the pickup zone.
3. Drive to Sanur Harbour (18 km, 40–65 min). The driver takes the Ngurah Rai bypass; early morning it is a smooth 40 minutes, mid-day and evening closer to 65.
4. Check in at your boat operator’s counter. Show the voucher or QR, present passports (manifests are checked by name), and pay the small harbour access fee the operator points you to.
5. Cross to Nusa Penida (30–45 min). Boats generally run from about 07:00 to late afternoon; the morning grid is densest.
6. Arrive at Penida (Toya Pakeh or Banjar Nyuh). Arrange island transport in advance — scooters and cars are limited and Penida’s roads are steep, so pre-booking a driver on the island saves a scramble at the jetty.

Making Your Boat: The Honest Numbers

Build your plan on the slow figures, not the brochure ones. From an international arrival, count 45–75 minutes to exit the terminal, up to 65 minutes to the harbour in traffic, then a 45–60 minute terminal buffer before departure. In practice a flight that lands by 09:00 connects comfortably to a late-morning boat; an afternoon landing should target the following morning’s departures rather than chase a last boat that leaves around 16:00–17:00.

Two conditions move the numbers. Southerly swell in the dry season (roughly May–September) can slow or cancel crossings, and operators reshuffle without much notice — reconfirm your boat the day before. And if you are chasing sunrise at Kelingking or Diamond Beach, remember the island’s own drive from the jetty adds 45–90 minutes on rough roads. When the timing is tight, spending your first night in Sanur or on the mainland and crossing fresh the next morning beats a white-knuckle dash. Big Suitcases, Day Trips, and When to Skip the Boat

Fast boats take luggage, but they ride it exposed on open deck racks — a rain cover earns its keep in the wet season, and fragile or business kit is better kept in a soft bag on your lap. If you are hauling multiple hard cases straight off a long-haul flight, consider leaving the bulk in a mainland hotel and crossing light for a day trip, then collecting it on the way back. Penida’s accommodation is simpler than mainland Bali’s, so many travellers do exactly this.

A day trip is realistic only if you land early: cross on a morning boat, see the west-coast headliners (Kelingking, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach), and return on an afternoon service.
